WHAT WE'LL COVER

1. UNDERSTAND THE BASICS – There is a lot of mystery and confusion around humour and how to do it properly. In fact, a lot of the information out there on how to be funny can be very damaging to a Professional. Traditional Humour (or humour for entertainment) is focused on getting a laugh at all costs. That doesn’t leave much room for your message or credibility. Instead, as Professionals, we need to think of humour in the context of business, where humour is used to get Attention, Connection and Engagement. Think of humour as the ACE up your sleeve. Understanding the basics will show you which techniques of humour and comedy are useful to Professionals and how to safely apply them to the art of business communication.

2. GET CLEAR ON OBJECTIVES – When you know what you want the humour to do, it’s much easier to add it to your message. Decide what you need each piece of humour to do in your business communication. For instance, it can help you get a friendly audience, connect with your audience and get them in a peak state for learning so your key message and main points are understood and remembered.

3. CREATE OR CURATE THE MATERIAL – Creating humorous material is 3 step process, first you have to generate the ideas, then write the material, and the magic happens in the editing and polishing of that material to get it audience ready.

4. DELIVER MAXIMUM LAUGHS – Once you have the material, it’s time to take your humour to a real live audience. The performance, delivery and timing of humour (in both live and online environments) is probably the most important part. If you don’t get this part right, all the work you have done up till this point is a complete waste of time.

5. NAIL THE APPROACH – There are 2 main components to successful humour – 1. what you say and 2. how it is received. You can have the best material in the world, but if you don’t nail the approach so your humour is received in the right way, you are leaving a lot of potential opportunities on the table.

Each topic is supported by learning material including a workbook, worksheets, resources, templates and example videos. These easy to use tools have “left-brained” comedy and incorporate logic into a traditionally creative process. So even if you don’t have a creative bone in your body, you’ll be fine!

WHY DOES THIS COURSE EXIST?

COMEDY SCHOOL FOR COACHES & SPEAKERS exists for many reasons. I got sick of watching people struggle to be funny and seeing their audiences suffer. Audiences shouldn’t have to tolerate a presentation; they should be able to enjoy it! (And I’m sure anyone who’s sat through a boring presentation would agree with me!)

Harry Warner, from Warner Bros, lived by the motto “educate, entertain and enlighten”. Mr Warner applied that motto to Hollywood films, but I think it’s equally valid for presentations.

Most presentations educate and enlighten, but often miss the piece in the middle – to entertain. Entertainment is often left out of a presentation because it can seem too hard or even scary. When people find out that I perform stand up comedy, most people are stunned and say “Wow, you must be brave!” I don’t think I’m that brave, but I do believe that most people assume I’m brave because they don’t understand how it’s done. They aren’t aware of the process behind it. They think I just walk out on stage and am naturally funny.

But what I know after 20 years in the Comedy Industry is that being funny and using humour is not something you are born with. It’s a skill that you develop. You can learn to be funny!

"Humour is a very powerful business tool - only if it’s used with business in mind"
